Kickstart the Week 44: The Mighty Protectors

The name may be different, but the site makes no secret that The Mighty Protectors is the new name for the third edition of Villains and Vigilantes, one of the first two superhero role playing games ever made. Back in the early days of pen and paper RPGs, it was the game anyone that wanted to play superheroes wanted to play. And while it would eventually be supplanted by Champions and the first Marvel and DC games, it still holds a special place in many gamers' hearts.

Original creator Jeff Dee is back with the new edition and it looks to add a bit of old school gaming back into superheroes, complete with d20s, random character generation and all those things you remember from games of the 80s and 90s.

If any of that intrigues you, make sure to give it a look at Kickstarter.

Kickstart the Week 40: VENOM Assault

Deck building games have been all the rage for a couple years now. I think they are a cool change of pace from classic card games and their ability to mimic pretty much every genre keeps them interesting on multiple levels. But up until now, one genre seems to have been missing: cartoon inspired military action. VENOM Assault looks to fill that gap.

The game universe is clearly designed to mimic 80s era G.I. Joe, more specifically the comic stories of Larry Hama. The characters tactically aid the Freedom Squadron as they do everything in their power to work as a team to stop the threat of VENOM from taking over the world. Unlike some games, it is played cooperatively, with all the players working enforce to take down the threat VENOM poses. The Kickstarter page features a few different examples of gameplay as well as a complete copy of the current edition of the game rules.

The card art is all by Phil Cho, a name I have never heard, but he's got a great style perfect for four color military action. It emulates the work of modern G.I. Joe artist Robert Atkins on multiple levels.

Sample card art by Phil Cho.
The game is still underfunded so if you're a G.I. Joe fan or a fan of deck building, I highly recommend checking it out on Kickstarter.

Kickstart the Week 24: Daring Comics RPG

As we continue to look for funds on Lightweight: Beyond, please check out this other Kickstarter featuring some great material.

I love super powered RPGs. If a role playing game lets me embody a hero of my choice and take him on huge adventures, I can definitely get into it. I probably own over a dozen superhero RPGs, but the Daring Comics RPG offers something a bit different: superheroes in the FATE system. FATE is an interesting, rather simple system designed for quick play which sometimes goes against the grain of a supers game, but the folks at Daring Entertainment understand that. The design team is working to blend the crunchier elements necessary for superheroes with the simple system of FATE. As the system runs Atomic Robo darn well, I suspect they will succeed admirably.

With less than a week to go, the Daring Comics RPG is still about a thousand dollars short of its glow, so give it your support if you can.

What's Up for July 6, 2015

I have had a lot of time to read over the past week as it turns out narcotics and muscle relaxers do not always make for the most coherent story writing. (Go figure.) But I have got a lot of reading time in and some watching time as well, so I have a few things for you to look at that I have been consuming.

Remember these are not recommendations, just a showing of what I have been up to for the last several days.

Full disclosure: These are presented in Amazon link form and every purchase through a click does give a few shekels to the site. (And is appreciated.)

What's Up for May 10, 2015

It has been a week of reading some great G.I. Joe action as I start my own story in that milieu, while I also took a look at some classic Hulk comics, watched a bit too much of a modern superhero mistake, all in between my regular writing projects and continuing my attempt to catch up on Lucha Underground.

So check them all out through the handy Amazon links below:

Kickstart the Week 13: Waynesaw

Waynesaw takes the endless runner genre of games and gives it a whole new life through the power of wanton destruction. You play a friendly chainsaw unaware of the fact that you're incredibly deadly and naive enough to help people he probably shouldn't. This looks to be a great little satirical game from the makers of the delightfully awful Amazing Super Powers.

Give it a look at Kickstarter.
