Quadrant Handbook 3: Airboy

Every week, the Quadrant Handbook brings another profile of the wide-ranging characters of the Quadrant Universe!

Art by Nik Poliwko.

Real Name: David "Davy" Nelson II

Occupation: Pilot

Marital Status: Single

Known Relatives: David (father, deceased)

Group Affiliation: formerly Airfighters

Base of Operations: Mobile

History: An orphan at a young age, Davy Nelson was raised in a Catholic mission in California. Alongside one of the church brothers, he designed a prototype aircraft. While his ally was inadvertently killed in a test flight, Davy rebuilt the craft and swore to use it to fight for justice. He named the craft Birdie. His adventures quickly earned him the name Airboy.

Airboy flew missions in Europe before the US’s entry into World War II. He would soon become a freelance operative for the American government working with a loose knit group of other pilots known as the Airfighters. He would battle Nazi, Italian and Japanese threats as well as strange figures like the immortal Zzed, the undead Misery and the Nazi aviatrix Valkyrie.

Valkyrie would eventually turn on her masters and join the Airfighters. She would soon become Airboy’s first lover. They would serve together in distinction, but Airboy’s continued service to the government after World War II would pull them apart.

In 1952, Airboy traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to stop the villainous Supreme Samurai. During an air battle, he would be shot down. He would survive the crash but be taken prisoner on Misery’s Air Tomb. He would be trapped there for thirty years, unconscious and unaging.

Awakened in 1982 by Aleta Van Wyngarden, agent of E.A.G.L.E. and daughter of the Flying Dutchman, he escaped the Air Tomb. She needed his help in bringing down the Supreme Samurai’s operation, now under the apparent control of Kimiko, the Samurai’s widow and Airboy’s ex-lover.

Instead they run afoul of Kimiko’s only child, the deadly Bombshell. He would soon retrieve Birdie and alongside Aleta and the undead Flying Dutchman, he destroyed the Supreme Samurai’s final weapon: a two hundred feet tall samurai robot. The mission would cost Aleta her life.

Airboy continued as an operative of E.A.G.L.E. for several years after his first mission, by those cases remain undocumented.

Height: 5’ 6”

Weight: 165 lbs.

Eyes: Brown

Hair: Blond

Strength level: Airboy possesses the normal human strength of a man of his apparent age that participates in vigorous physical activity.

Known superhuman abilities: Airboy possesses a mental link to Birdie, his aircraft. This link allows him to react at superhuman speeds while piloting the plane. He also can sense Birdie’s presence nearby even when separated from the craft.

Equipment: Airboy carries a revolver on his side at all times.

His most important equipment is Birdie, his specialized aircraft. Upgraded multiple times, the craft shows a level of artificial intelligence despite the lack of any kind of computer systems in place. After modifications in the 1980s, it can reach speeds up to Mach Two with relative ease. Normally armed with twin vulcan cannons underneath the fuselage, Birdie also can carry a payload of up to eight missiles.
